Young adults, particularly college students, face significant challenges with alcohol consumption. Instead of preventing drinking altogether, how might we promote safer, healthier drinking habits in social settings where alcohol culture is prevalent? Young adults often lack the knowledge and tools to drink responsibly, leading to dangerous situations and regrettable decisions.

PROBLEM

We conducted in-depth interviews with university students to understand their drinking behaviours, challenges, and needs.

Our interview questions explored:

  • Drinking frequency and contexts

  • Peer pressure experiences

  • Limit-setting behaviours

  • Regrettable incidents

  • Social aspects of drinking

Through iterative testing, we discovered the importance of mobile-friendly button placement, prioritizing thumb accessibility and familiar controls like sliders to support intuitive navigation. Early prototypes lacked progress indicators and back/exit options, so we updated flows to give users more transparency and control, helping them feel confident and at ease during onboarding.


Tone & Branding

We focused on a friendly, empathetic, and supportive tone to establish trust without being patronizing.

USER RESEARCH

WHAT WE LEARNED

1. Learning Limits Through Trial and Error

Most users initially struggled to know their limits, often learning through negative experiences like blacking out or vomiting. Their tolerances fluctuated over time, making consistent responsible drinking challenging.


2. Mixed Experiences with Peer Pressure

While some users reported direct pressure to drink more, others felt no such pressure. Those who did experience pressure found it difficult to resist in order to fit in with their social group.


3. Alcohol as a Social Lubricant

Nearly all interviewees viewed alcohol as helpful for reducing social anxiety and making conversations easier, particularly when meeting new people or in unfamiliar social situations.


4. Behavioural Changes and Regret

Users acknowledged that alcohol significantly influenced their behavior, often leading to actions they later regretted, including unwanted communications with certain contacts.

Brought to life in Figma with an intuitive and engaging interface, the app addresses concerns about alcohol consumption by offering tools for education, tracking, and responsible decision-making. It includes features such as customizable drinking goals, a real-time location map to check in on friends, and notification reminders to help users pace themselves throughout the night. By blending practicality with a fun user experience, Booze Buddy encourages mindful drinking and promotes a healthier, more responsible social culture.
